การประกวดนางสาวไทยถือเป็นการประกวดนางงามรายการแรกของไทย จัดครั้งแรกเมื่อวันที่ 10 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2477 ภายหลังการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง พ.ศ.2475 โดยใช่ชื่อว่า "นางสาวสยาม"รัฐบาลได้จัดขึ้นในงานเฉลิมฉลองรัฐธรรมนูญ ภายในพระราชอุทานสราญรมย์ ซึ่งเป็นสโมสรคณะราษฎร มีการกำหนดระยะการจัดงาน 5 วัน คือวันที่ 8-12 ธันวาคม เป็นการประกวดนางสามสยาม โดยผู้เข้าประกวดแต่กายด้วยชุดไทย ต่อมาได้เปลี่ยนเป็นชุดเสื้อกระโปรงติดกัน ตัดเย็บด้วยผ้าไหมของไทย เสื้อเปิดหลัง กางเกง กระโปรงยาวถ฿งเข่า และได้เพิ่มการสวมใส่ชุดกีฬา เสื้อแขนกุดเปิดหลังในปีต่อมา
